What is OKFestival?
The Open Knowledge Festival, known also as OKFestival, is a global, diverse, inclusive and participatory event. It’s an opportunity to gather open movement makers, thinkers, activists, and researchers from around the world so that we can share our learnings and ideas, work together on tangible outcomes and make plans for the future! If you’re interested in how to use open knowledge to tackle local and global challenges, and to better understand and improve our everyday lives, we hope you’ll join us in Berlin.
What is the Open Knowledge Foundation?
The Open Knowledge Foundation is a non-profit organisation founded in 2004 and dedicated to promoting open content and open data in all their forms – including government data, publicly funded research and public domain cultural content. It is an international leader in its field and has extensive experience in building tools and community around open material. More information at okfn.org.
What is Open Knowledge?
Open knowledge is a comprehensive concept that involves sharing knowledge in all its forms – from genes to geodata, from literature to programming code – so that it can be freely used, modified and shared by anyone. This idea, based on the Open Definition, provides an opportunity for positive transformation within our information society, where old hierarchies are replaced by agile, diverse, networked and experimental progress and cooperation.
What other events has the Open Knowledge Foundation organised in the past?
The Open Knowledge Foundation has run a multitude of events since 2005 from festivals and data expeditions to camps, hackathons, training workshops, book sprints, meetups, and hangouts, both in person and online. Participants have included activists, hackers, researchers, policy makers and openness enthusiasts from all around the world.
Events have a significant role for the Open Knowledge Foundation. They focus attention, gather audiences around specific topics and represent both the public face of the organization and its multiple projects. They’re a great opportunity to help data enthusiasts meet face to face in order to support working and learning together.
Why is OKFestival taking place in Berlin?
For OKFestival we wanted to pick a city that would be as accessible as possible to everyone who’d like to attend. Berlin has many positive points: accommodation is reasonably priced, there are vibrant local open and tech communities and a welcoming, friendly atmosphere.
What does the ticket price include?
We’ve worked hard to keep the price of the tickets as low as possible. The price includes admission to the opening evening event and both full days of the festival. There will be coffee and soft drinks available during the festival as well as wifi throughout the venue. We are also offering financial aid to those who need it – more information coming soon.
You will need to buy your own food at the event, but there are lots of competitively priced options within the venue.
Will there be other events in Berlin around OKFestival?
Yes! There will be fringe events taking place either side of the main festival. Keep an eye on the blog for more info and don’t forget to consider these events when booking your travel.
How do I propose a fringe event for OKFestival?
To further extend the festival spirit and to make the most of this unique global gathering, why not organise a fringe event around OKFestival? If you email us, we’ll happily discuss your ideas with you and provide some organising tips. The OKFestival won’t be able to cover any costs of the fringe events or do any of the organising, but we can promote your event on the website and put you in touch with like-minded folks who might want to help you put together your event.
Can I propose something for the OKFestival programme?
Yes, stay tuned for more information about how to submit programme proposals – coming soon! You might want to add the OKFestival blog to your RSS reader or sign up for the OKFestival newsletter to make sure you don’t miss any important information.
I would like to offer my support as a volunteer. How can I apply?
We are looking for highly motivated volunteers willing to join us to make OKFestival 2014 a fantastic experience for everyone. Details of how to join the volunteer team are coming soon – follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or sign-up for our newsletter to get updates about it.
Is there any financial aid available to attend OKFestival?
It’s important to us that anyone who wants to attend OKFestival is able to participate. To help with travel and accomodation costs, we’re putting together a financial aid programme. More information on how to apply for this in the coming weeks.
